A honey oat milk latte is one of the most popular drinks on coffee shop menus, and it's one of the easiest to make at home. You need three ingredients, a few minutes, and whatever coffee setup you already have.

Oat milk is naturally creamy and a little sweet, and honey rounds out the bitterness of espresso without covering it up. A pinch of cinnamon on top makes it feel special.

Why Oat Milk?

If you're avoiding dairy, oat milk is a great option. But even if you're not, it's worth a try in your latte. If you've never had it, oat milk tastes mild and just a little sweet, with a soft, toasty oat flavor in the background. It's thicker and creamier than most plant milks, so it doesn't taste watery in coffee, and it steams and foams beautifully. That's exactly why it works so well in lattes.

The key is stirring the honey into the hot espresso first. It dissolves instantly there, instead of sinking to the bottom of your cup.

Honey Oat Milk Latte

Espresso, creamy oat milk, and raw honey.

Prep2 min Cook3 min Total5 min Yield1 drink

Ingredients

  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces), or 1/2 cup very strong brewed coffee
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons raw honey (we use our Beeholden Farms raw honey)
  • 1 cup oat milk (a "barista" style oat milk foams best)
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon, for topping
  • Optional: a drop of vanilla extract

Hot Latte

  1. Sweeten the espresso. Brew the espresso into your mug and stir in the honey (and vanilla, if using) until it dissolves.
  2. Heat the milk. Warm the oat milk on the stove or in the microwave until steaming, but don't let it boil.
  3. Froth. Use a milk frother, or shake the warm milk in a sealed jar for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour. Pour the milk over the espresso, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top. Dust with cinnamon.

Iced Latte

  1. Stir the honey into the hot espresso until dissolved.
  2. Fill a tall glass with ice and add the cold oat milk.
  3. Pour the sweetened espresso over the top and stir.

Recipe notes: No espresso machine? A moka pot, AeroPress, or double-strength French press coffee all work. For iced drinks, you can also use our honey simple syrup, which mixes right into cold milk.

Flavor Ideas

  • Honey lavender: steep a pinch of culinary lavender in the milk as it warms, then strain.
  • Honey cardamom: add a pinch of ground cardamom along with the cinnamon.
  • Honey chai: swap the espresso for our honey chai concentrate.

Storage and Safety Tips

  • Best made fresh. Lattes don't keep well, but you can brew espresso ahead and refrigerate it for iced drinks for up to 2 days.
  • Keep honey out of boiling milk. Add it to the espresso instead.
  • Not for babies. Honey in any form should never be given to children under 12 months old.

Better Honey, Better Coffee
